How to Replace Negative Thought Patterns
Changing Negative Thought Patterns Negative thought patterns are one of the most common challenges...
Every client tells you things. And every client also shows you things. The words a client uses are important, but they are only part of the picture. Behaviour is language too. The way a client moves in the space, the moments when she goes quiet, the topics she steers toward and the ones she avoids, the physical signs of her emotional state, and the gaps between what she says and what she does all offer valuable insight. Learning to notice these patterns allows a coach to understand the client more fully and respond more effectively.
One of the most common patterns is avoidance. When a client repeatedly shifts away from certain topics, becomes quiet, or changes direction suddenly, it often points to something important. This is not always resistance. It is often a protective response. Recognising this allows the coach to approach these areas with care and at the right time, rather than forcing the conversation.
Clients often show changes in energy during a session. This may appear as a shift in tone, posture, or level of engagement. These moments can signal something significant. Bringing attention to these shifts with simple, open questions helps the client become more aware of what is happening beneath the surface.
The body often reflects what is not being expressed verbally. Changes in posture, breathing, or physical tension can provide clues about the client—s emotional state. Gently acknowledging these observations can help the client reconnect with their experience and gain deeper awareness.

Sign UpBehaviour outside the session is just as important as what happens within it. Patterns such as punctuality, follow through on commitments, and consistency can reveal how a client approaches responsibility and change. These behaviours often connect directly to the goals they are working toward.
The interaction between coach and client can also reveal important patterns. Clients may repeat behaviours they experience in other relationships, such as holding back, over explaining, or seeking approval. Noticing and exploring these dynamics can lead to deeper insight and meaningful change.
Reading behaviour beyond words is a skill that develops with practice. It requires attention, patience, and a willingness to observe without making assumptions. Over time, this awareness allows the coach to respond more accurately and support the client more effectively.
At Coachivas, coaches focus on building this level of awareness through practice and reflection. The aim is not to interpret or assume, but to notice and explore. By paying attention to both what is said and what is shown, coaching becomes more precise and more impactful.
