Scope before you book
Life coach vs therapist: which one do you actually need?
A therapist treats mental health. A life coach helps you decide, plan, and stay with a change you can still act on. If you are in crisis, start with clinical care. If you are stuck and functional, coaching can be the better first call.
The plain split
What each role is for
Therapy is a licensed health service in the United States. A therapist can diagnose, treat conditions such as depression and PTSD, and work with trauma that is still active in the room.
Life coaching is not licensed like therapy. There is no state license required to call yourself a coach. That is why a good coach is careful about scope. She does not diagnose. She does not replace your clinician.
A counselor is usually a licensed clinician with a counseling degree. A psychologist has doctoral-level training and can do testing and treatment. A life coach has none of those legal duties. She has a method for goals, habits, and decisions.
A practical test
When coaching is the right next step
Coaching fits when you can get through a workday, you are not in immediate danger, and the problem is a decision, a pattern, or a next chapter you keep postponing.
Career change, confidence at work, a relationship you want to handle differently, burnout that is still I am exhausted and I need a plan: those are common coaching starts on this site.
If advice from friends already failed, that does not automatically mean you need a therapist. It often means you need someone who will not hand you another list, and will ask what you will actually do before the next session.
Stay on the right side of the line
When you need a therapist first
Go to a licensed clinician if you have suicidal thoughts, recent trauma you cannot work through safely, an eating disorder, addiction that needs medical care, or a diagnosis that is currently unmanaged.
Some women use both. Therapy covers clinical care. Coaching covers goals, habits, and decisions outside the clinic. That only works if both people know who owns what.
A coach who promises to heal your trauma in six calls is selling past her license. Find a clinician instead.
A common mix-up
Relationship coach vs couples therapist
A relationship coach works on communication, boundaries, and what you want from the relationship you are in or the one you want next. She is not treating a clinical disorder in the couple.
Couples therapy is the better door when there is abuse, a mental-health crisis, or a pattern that needs a clinician in the room. If you mainly need language and decisions, start with a relationship coach.
Another common mix-up
Burnout coaching is not clinical treatment
Burnout coaching is for women who are still functioning and need to change the load, the job, or the way they recover. It is not treatment for major depression.
If you cannot get out of bed, or work has become impossible, call a therapist or your doctor. If you can still perform and hate the cost of it, a burnout coach is a reasonable first look.
Money, briefly
What you pay, not what they earn
Therapy is often billed through insurance when it is medically necessary. Coaching almost never is. You pay the session fee yourself.
That can make coaching look more expensive per hour. It can also make it faster to start. Read the client cost page for ranges. Coach pay lives on a different page.

If you are functional and stuck, start with a coach
If you are unsafe or clinically unwell, start with a licensed clinician. Do not shop directories for that.
If the work is a decision or a next chapter, browse women coaches and read a profile before you book.
Coach vs therapist questions
What is a life coach vs a therapist?
A therapist is a licensed clinician who treats mental health. A life coach is not a substitute clinician. She helps you set direction and follow through on work that is not a medical diagnosis.
Is a life coach the same as a counselor or psychologist?
No. Counselors and psychologists are licensed (or working toward licensure) and can treat clinical issues. A life coach is not in that legal category.
Can I see a life coach and a therapist at the same time?
Yes, if both know the split. The therapist owns clinical care. The coach owns goals, habits, and decisions that are safe to work on outside the clinic.
Is life coaching cheaper than therapy?
Not always. Therapy may be covered by insurance. Coaching usually is not. Compare the out-of-pocket session fee, not the sticker you see on social media.
What about life coach vs career coach or health coach?
Those are specialties, not licenses. A career coach focuses on work. A health coach focuses on habits around the body. A life coach may cover a wider brief. None of them replace a physician or a therapist.
