Maybe the Terms Have Changed

Maybe the Terms Have Changed

28 Sep 2026

The promotion sounds great until someone mentions the travel. And the evening calls. And being “available when needed,” which has a way of becoming always.

You could do the job. You’d probably be good at it. So why aren’t you excited?

Maybe you haven’t lost your ambition. Maybe you’re paying closer attention to what an opportunity asks of you.

You can value your career and your paycheck. You can want interesting work, more influence, and room to grow. You can also want to pick up your kid, make plans on a weeknight, or have enough energy left at 6:00 to be a person.

In My Era’s recent Listening Report, women weren’t describing a sudden lack of interest in work. They were questioning whether the usual signs of success still gave them what they wanted. For some, flexibility and control over their time felt more valuable than a bigger title.

That doesn’t make every promotion a bad deal. It means the title isn’t the whole deal.

Before you say yes to the next role or project, ask:

What does this give me? Money, meaningful work, authority, stability? Name what you genuinely want.

What will it cost? Include your time, energy, and the parts of life that would have to make room for it.

Does that trade fit my life right now? Maybe it does. Maybe the terms need negotiating. Maybe you’re allowed to pass.

You don’t have to decide what kind of ambitious woman you’ll be forever. You just need to know what deserves your effort in this season, and what you’re no longer willing to trade for it.
